Synopsis

After directing Brendan Gleeson in the Academy Award-winning short Six Shooter, playwright Martin McDonagh made his feature film debut with this daft crime movie about two Irish hitmen laying low in Bruges, Belgium. Played by Gleeson and Colin Farrell, they take in the sights and bicker right up until the next fateful melee. Co-starring Ralph Fiennes, Jeremie Renier, and Clemence Poesy. "A remarkable first film, as impressive in its own way as House of Games, the first film by David Mamet, who McDonagh is sometime s compared with" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times). Martin McDonagh---Great Britain---2008---107 mins.

Genre-twisting is a high-wire act that can lose all balance and end with a messy thud. If you want black comedy you can mix funny with gore, and even abject moral confusion can be hilarious. But how does one pivot from all that to a reflection on random killing and genuine soul-torturing regret? Does the director expect us to laugh in the first half and then drop to the depths of our souls so as to experience cathartic pity for the poor fellas? They are much too shallow and stupid for that. Thud. One wishes the director had held to the comic vision and superb dialogue of the first half. 3 stars for first half only.

A shimmering, dreamlike meditation on violence, responsibility, fate, and hell in the form of a dark comedy. All of the performances rise to material, with a special notice to Clémence Poésy, whose performance as a drug dealer. Her perspective is ours.

In Bruges was not quite pathetic, but it was pretentious, gory and a real turn-off. Two obnoxious characters being obnoxious to other obnoxious people in a lovely Medieval city inside whose buildings lurked gorgeous Hieronymous Bosch paintings of more obnoxious creatures.

In Bruges is a beautiful action film. The ridiculous amount of blood is balanced with spectacular views of the city, which makes for a nice trip. Although its premise is cliche and predictable, In Bruges makes up for it with a very original style and snappy performances from its stars. Colin Ferrel is remarkably not annoying, and is cast quite well as a desolate yet vivacious hitman. In Bruges is not a 'must-see,' but it is quite a few notches up from the standard action flick. I suggest putting the subtitles on, or you're likely to miss quite a bit of the witty Irish banter.
