Synopsis

This semi-autobiographical film by Italian director, Ermanno Olmi (The Tree of the Wooden Clogs), confronts the perils and depersonalization of the business world. A shy young man gets his first job in a large office in Milan and finds his life slowly drained away by the conformity required of his position. Olmi used real office workers for the cast in this humorous, yet sad, work of Italian neo-realism. In Italian with English subtitles. Ermanno Olmi---Italy---1961---98 mins.

I guess that it's easy to take pot shots at business, but business deserves them. Il posto isn't flashy, but it is a searing indictment nonetheless. My brother worked for over 40 years in a Milan office, and I hope to god he didn't end up like the poor schmucks in Il posto.

This early film of Ermanno Olmi was retitled THE SOUND OF TRUMPETS when released in America in 1963. This unexciting story about an unexciting young man's bland coming of age has some interesting location footage, but won't stick in the memory very long. Yet there are many like him, although not usually as a movie's lead character.
