Synopsis

Preston Sturges wrote the screenplay for this delightful romantic comedy, based on a play by Ferenc Molnar. Margaret Sullavan stars as a young woman who leaves a girls' orphanage to take a job as a movie theater usherette. Millionaire Frank Morgan pursues her, but she fends him off by claiming to be married. Herbert Marshall is the unsuspecting fellow passed off as her husband, and Sullavan uses her influence over Morgan to help him in his career. "...enlivened by Sturges''s wicked sophistication and sardonic digs at class pretensions...Sullavan''s blend of determination and vulnerability is incandescent" (Ted Shen, Chicago Reader). William Wyler---USA---1935---97 mins.

One of the best Hollywood comedies of the 1930's. Great Preston Sturges screenplay, well directed by William Wyler, and the cast does a top-notch job. All the hallmarks of Sturges' later films can be seen here.
