Synopsis

In 1969, the Maysles Brothers followed the Rolling Stones on their North American tour, the climax of which was a free concert for 300,000 fans in Altamont, California, where the crowd and security (dubiously provided by Hell's Angels bikers) got out of control and one man was murdered. Featuring some of the Stones'' most beloved songs, as well as appearances by Tina Turner, The Jefferson Airplane and members of The Grateful Dead, Gimme Shelter remains much more than a performance film. It encapsulates the end of the idealism of the 1960s and the beginning of the disillusionment of the 1970s. Albert Maysles/David Maysles/Charlotte Zwerin---USA---1970---91 mins.
