Synopsis

Writer/director Richard Brooks' skillful adaptation of the Sinclair Lewis novel is an unsparing attack on a corrupt but charismatic evangelist named Elmer Gantry (Burt Lancaster), whose perverse pursuit of wealth and power tears apart the social and economic fabric of a small, midwestern town. I was never a fan of Burt Lancaster's clenched teeth style of acting. Jean Simmons's British accent jars. Shirley Jones' Lulu made me wonder if she was't imagining how Marian the Librarian would have turned out if she had submitted to Harold Hill's advances. Nevertheless, Elmer Gantry is greater than the sum of its parts. The plot was relevant when it was made, and it's relevant now. Brooks keeps everything under control. References to 20/s sawdust trail megastars Aimee Semple McPherson and Billy Sunday are bang on. Elmer Gantry made an impact on me when I first saw it,. as it did on my companion, a young Methodist minister. As we left the theater he muttered, "You know, we're not all like that".
