Synopsis

This historic film originally suffered from the notoriety of its nude scene with Hedy Lamarr, the very thing has kept it in the public eye up to today. The Pope denounced it, Hitler banned it, American distributors censored it and Hedy's millionaire German munitions maker husband tried to buy up all the prints and destroy them. But there''s much more to this film than that puritanical reception suggests. Hedy plays a young bride with an impotent husband who has an affair but refuses to go away with her lover when the husband commits suicide. Notable for its use of location sound and its very stylish, lyrical eroticism and images that beg psychoanalytic interpretation. Gustav Machaty---Czechoslovakia---1932---89 mins.

Almost a silent. You can understand why when Hedy finally opens her mouth: she sounds like the scared shy girl trying out for the class play. Miss Lamarr proved at the outset of her career that she couldn't act. About the only redeeming feature of this dopey movie is the photography, and even it becomes self-conscioulsy arty toward the end. On a somewhat related topic, the slightly pudgy baby fat Hedwig Kiesler of Ecstasy bears little resemblance to the slim and glamourous Hedy Lamarr I remember. What a testimony to the skill of Hollywood makeover artists.

Despite it having a bit of a notorious reputation based upon a earlier standard of nudity (actually quite brief and modest by today's standards), this is a very good movie and a must for fans of the incomparable Hedy.
