Synopsis

A gigantic allegory of the rise of Nazism through the decadent Krupp-like family, who wallow in their opulent decay while their factories produce armaments for the Nazis; a baroque film which explores the dark cycles of violence and evil in human history and consciousness with erotic indulgence. With Dirk Bogarde, Ingrid Thulin, Helmut Berger, Charlotte Rampling. In Luchino Visconti---Italy/Germany---1969---146 mins.

Whew! Corporate and political intrigue, history rehashed, decadence, opulence, pedophilia, incest, drug addiction, figurative and literal back stabbing (night of the long knives, bacchanalian orgy, forced suicide. Actors chew up the scenery: I don't think I ever before heard Dirk Bogarde raise his voice. At the end I wondered how long Martin, as a sexual deviant, would last in the SS. Overwrought, overlong yet oddly compelling, like being mesmerized by a cobra.
