Very well constructed and original. Rife with allusions and symbolism. It is a vampire film that never mentions the word "vampire" and actually recoils in horror at the prospects of an eternal life sustained by blood but draws one into many dark and surprising corners of an elaborately constructed world. Del Toro calls it a lapsed Catholic film, and while lapsed Catholics and horror aficionados are bound to like it, it has treasures to offer any cineaste.
