Synopsis

Banned by the Iranian government, this masterfully crafted and deeply affecting film found an international audience after winning top honors at the Venice Film Festival. This is an honest, disturbing look at the plight of ordinary Iranian women dealing with institutionalized political and sexual repression. "The most talented disciple of Iranian master Abbas Kiarostami, Panahi actually tops him at leaving things out of a story to tantalize the viewer...You can't afford to miss this" (Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader). In Farsi with English subtitles. Jafar Panahi---Iran---2000---91 mins.

The four episodes that make up this film are connected in the most accidental ways, but together they form a chilling portrait of the problems faced by Iranian women. Only the last story reaches a conclusion. The others are left unresolved, accenting the tragedy of Iranian women, whose have no resolution, satisfactory or otherwise, to their status as victims of a repressive regime. It is a tragic film, but I can’t help wonder if the film would have taken a more subversive tone if the director had been a woman. The fate of the women may have been the same, but they likely would have shown greater resourcefulness, much like the female protagonist of Panahi’s later film Offside (2006). In December 2010, Panahi was sentenced to six years in prison and banned from making films or traveling overseas for twenty years. In some sense, the culmination of this film foreshadows his own fate even more than his later films. It too is unresolved.
