Synopsis

Critics were touting Alfonso Cuaron's adaptation of P.D. James'' dystopian novel as the best sci-fi film since Blade Runner, even though Children of Men''s vision of the future is far darker, more politically charged, and--here''s the scary part--more plausible. In 2027, women have lost the ability to conceive. Clive Owen plays a disillusioned, alcoholic hunk called upon by his ex-wife (Julianne Moore), now the head of a left-wing terrorist group, to protect a piece of precious cargo--a pregnant girl. The seven-minute-long shot of a battle between the terrorist zealots and the totalitarian government is the clear highlight, but the film''s mise-en-scene, overflowing with references to art, music, and contemporary politics, is not to be underestimated. An Oscar nominee for cinematography, editing, and adapted screenplay. With Michael Caine, Alfonso Cuaron---Great Britain/USA---2006---109 mins.

Michael Caine's performance is great fun to watch (best air guitar bit since wayne and garth), but the script attempts to deal with too many plot elements while not sufficiently developing any of them. This film is no Blade Runner. Fortunately, the music and the production values are strong enough that I almost didn't care about the rest. It's watchable, but in the end I felt disappointed.
