Synopsis

Without warning, happy, successful Parisian couple Georges (Daniel Auteuil) and Anne Laurent (Juliette Binoche) receive anonymous videos suggesting that they are being stalked. The tapes are followed by disturbingly violent, if childish, drawings. Georges, a well-known literary talk show host, shrugs off the mysterious messages, but Anne grows increasingly distressed and fearful for their teenage son. She grows to suspect that an incident in Georges' past is behind the increasing torment. Michael Haneke---France---2005---117 mins

This slow-paced, almost incomprehensible film is not for ‘Action Film’ followers. If you're looking for a happy ending, or an ending of any sort, forget it. It's more of an allegory & study working on several levels; on both the state of the 3rd world in France & disintegration of the façade of a middle-class, modestly famous man who has spent his life covering up the fact that he's a creep. The scenes between him & his wife when he isn't telling her what he has planned to do, are great scenes of trust betrayed. The couple’s son is well played with the perfect balance of an adolescent’s new-found, unyielding sense of superiority, idealism, & disdain for parents whom he finds lacking. To come even close to figuring out at all what has been going on, you must sit through the closing credits (lots didn't) & watch the lower left hand corner. You still won't have a solid answer, but it will lead you to mull over some ideas, which is no bad thing. It is definitely not a film for someone who wants things cut &dried. If you liked the uneasy balance of this film, you’ll probably enjoy La Moustache (2005).
