Synopsis

Vincent Gallo's scandalous love story/portrait of a lost soul rocked the Cannes Film Festival with its brazen unconventionality and sexuality. Gallo stars as motorcycle racer Bud Clay, who takes off on a meditative cross-country odyssey. Long, contemplative shots chart Bud''s journey, which is framed by his intense feelings for the love of his life, Daisy (Chloe Sevigny). With its notorious, uncensored finale, The Brown Bunny presents one of the frankest portrayals of male sexuality ever seen in Vincent Gallo---USA---2004---92 mins.

The reputation of this film is that it is tedious, frustrating, shocking, and disgusting. It has been significantly edited from the version that initially was shown by 26 minutes and film viewers still may consider that the pruning did not go far enough. Despite acknowledging understanding how those feelings about the film may be justified, I found the film to pack an emotional wallop that has stayed with me. It is a simple, yet raw and powerful film about love, sexuality, trust, drugs, guilt, responsibility, and obsession. It is, unfortunately, not until the end of the film that one begins to understand how the tedious and frustrating first hour or so aptly describes the emotional limbo that the main character is experiencing. This is not for everyone, but it is a very thought-provoking and challenging film both in making us ponder subjects we may wish to avoid and in how this type of intense story could be told differently.
