Synopsis

Considered one of the most beautiful films ever produced, Black Narcissus is set amidst the awesome grandeur of the Himalayas. Starring Deborah Kerr, this is a haunting emotional film about isolation, spiritual failure and sexual frustration in a convent. "...one of Britain's great cinematic masterpieces, a marvelous evocation of hysteria and repression" (Geoff Andrew, Time Out Film Guide). Michael Powell/Emeric Pressburger---Great Britain---1947---100 mins.

A true classic. The backdrop adds beautifully to the nuns' subjective experience of the place allowing the viewer to understand this typically offsetting group of people (yes, I am a product of the Catholic school system) in a new and empathetic way.

Black Narcissus is visually stunning. The colors, shadows, and symbolic set designs are wonderful. The story is good, and has a definite Old Hollywood feel, even if it was made in England. Anyone who enjoys old-fashioned movies would like this one.
